The Valerie Wilson and Janine Turnbull Inspiring Individual Award

This award was created in memory of two very inspiring individuals, close to the hearts of the ADA team: Valerie Wilson and Janine Turnbull.

Valerie was an extraordinary woman whose life was defined by compassion, advocacy, and joy. Valerie championed the rights of those in need, tirelessly fighting for the benefits and compensation they deserved, and achieving remarkable results. Her passion extended beyond her work, as she spent time in Italy, a country she loved, working with children and embracing life with warmth and generosity. Valerie lived in Sunderland and graduated from the University of Sunderland. She was deeply loved by many and known for her radiant spirit and unwavering commitment to justice. Tragically, her life was cut short 3 decades ago when she was murdered by her ex-husband, following previous attempts on her life. Her story is a stark reminder of the devastating impact of domestic abuse – and of the urgent need to end it.

Janine was a very special individual who passed away at home on the 4th August 2025 following an 11 month battle with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). She leaves behind her loving husband John and their 12 year old son Ethan. Before her illness, Janine served as a Community Engagement Officer with Northumbria Police, where she championed social justice and dedicated herself to supporting those most in need. Her commitment extended beyond her professional role – Janine was a tireless volunteer, always striving to uplift her community and empower those around her. She refused to be defined by her diagnosis, instead leaving a legacy of compassion, kindness, and unwavering dedication to positive change. In recognition of her extraordinary impact, Janine was honoured with the BBC Radio Newcastle Make a Difference Award 2025 in the Volunteer category – a fitting tribute to a truly inspirational woman.

This was awarded for the first time around the ADA National Learning Event in November 2025 to two very well deserved award recipients:

Micala Trussler and Lee Trussler

Micala Trussler and Lee Trussler co-founded the Charity Holly’s Hope, in memory of their daughter, Holly, who was tragically murdered on 27th January 2023 in Hexham, Northumberland. Holly was just 15 years old when her life was taken by an ex-boyfriend who refused to accept the end of their relationship.

Driven by unimaginable loss and a deep commitment to change, Micala and Lee established Holly’s Hope to educate and empower young people, parents, and educators. The initiative aims to deliver a powerful educational programme that raises awareness of coercive control, unhealthy relationships, and the early warning signs of abuse. Through Holly’s story, Micala and Lee advocate for prevention, understanding, and action — ensuring that no other family has to endure such a devastating tragedy.
