Understanding Domestic Abuse – HMP Northumberland

This session helps support a safer, more trauma‑informed custodial environment, contribute to rehabilitation, and align with operational priorities around safeguarding, staff wellbeing, and reducing reoffending. The session builds knowledge and confidence to recognise indicators of domestic abuse, understand trauma responses, and respond safely using clear referral pathways. 

By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the forms, dynamics, and indicators of domestic abuse (including coercive control).
  • Explain trauma and its behavioural presentations within custodial environments.
  • Demonstrate trauma-informed responses that preserve safety, dignity and procedural fairness.
  • Apply appropriate local referral pathways and employer support mechanisms,
  • Implement early identification strategies and proportionate action to strengthen organisational safeguarding culture.
